About The Hallowell Center

Do you sell Dr. Hallowell’s books there?
We usually keep a small supply of Dr. Hallowell’s books on hand at The Hallowell Center for sale. The books may be purchased in person or over the phone. Dr. Hallowell’s books are also available at major bookstores and online web sites like http://www.amazon.com.

Are you an “all-in-one” facility?
Yes. The Hallowell Center is an “all-in-one” facility (testing/treatment/medications). All of our evaluative, diagnostic and treatment services take place under one roof, at one convenient location: in New York City, at 117 West 72nd street, on the 3rd floor.

Which age groups do you treat?
We treat patients of all ages – from 4 to 90! Interestingly enough, many of our adult patients at The Hallowell Center are people who have never previously spoken to, or sought advice from, a professional in the mental health field to help them overcome their challenges.

Which conditions do you treat?
Although we specialize in the treatment of ADD, we have an expert staff of psychiatrists, psychologists, social workers and coaches who diagnose, evaluate and treat a broad spectrum of emotional and cognitive conditions. We have helped people challenged by anxiety, depression, bipolar disorder, developmental and learning disorders, eating disorders, OCD, post-traumatic stress disorder, and other conditions to lead happier, more productive lives. We have also helped people who find themselves at a point where they are just not satisfied with some aspect of their lives and are in need of expert, non-judgmental support, sometimes just for a very brief period.

Evaluations/Getting Started

Which therapist/clinician should I choose?
Call The Hallowell Center and ask to speak with our New Patient Specialist, who will ask you some questions to help determine your specific needs and then schedule you to come in to meet with the appropriate Hallowell Center clinician for a formal intake session. At The Hallowell Center, all of our clinicians work together quite closely in a coordinated team approach, and it is possible that you will meet with more than one person during both the diagnostic and treatment phase. If you have not already done so, we encourage you to visit the MEET OUR STAFF section of this web site and browse through the individual staff profiles. All of our professional staff shares an extraordinary commitment to, and passion for, their field of expertise, and you will find a wealth of valuable information contained in their profiles.

How much do evaluations cost?
Because of the unique nature of each patient evaluation, it is hard to quote an exact figure. It really depends upon the number of diagnostic tests and sessions needed to effectively evaluate and diagnose a particular condition. New patients meet with a Hallowell Center clinician for a formal intake session. Based on the outcome of that session, we should be able to recommend a specific testing and diagnostic schedule and provide you with a more accurate cost estimate.

How do I get started on an evaluation?
It’s as easy as picking up the phone. Dial 212-799-7777 and ask to speak with our New Patient Specialist (there is no charge for this initial phone interview). During the phone interview, the New Patient Specialist will ask you some questions to determine your specific needs and concerns and then, if indicated, schedule an appointment for you to come in to The Hallowell Center to meet with one of our clinicians for a formal intake session. This is the first step in the evaluation process.

What does an evaluation involve?
The Hallowell Center offers several different types of evaluations, depending on your individual needs. All evaluations begin with an in-person, formal initial consultation or intake session conducted by one of our clinicians at The Hallowell Center. During the intake session, we work to understand your unique challenges and concerns and create a detailed history – including educational, work and relationship experiences, along with a history of individual health, family history, past treatment and developmental history. After listening to and evaluating all of this background information, the clinician may, in some instances, be able to provide a preliminary assessment right away and recommend a customized treatment plan. In other instances, however, the clinician may determine that additional testing is required in order to complete the evaluation process.

The Hallowell Center offers a wide range of evaluations, including full neuropsychological evaluations – considered the “gold standard” in comprehensive assessment of cognitive and behavioral functioning.

Payment and Insurance

What is the cancellation policy?
In order to provide the best care for clients hoping to fill cancelled appointments, reminder calls will be made 48 hours before a scheduled appointment. To avoid being charged for your appointment, you must cancel by 10:00 am the full business day before the appointment. For Monday appointments you must cancel by 10:00 am on Friday. Late cancellations due to unexpected illness or other emergencies will be evaluated on an individual basis by the clinician.

Can I set up a payment plan?
Payment plans are available, on occasion, for major clinical testing, but not for ongoing treatment services.

Do you take insurance or Medicare/Medicaid?
The Hallowell Center does not accept insurance, Medicare or Medicaid. However, we will prepare an itemized bill with all the relevant information for you to submit to your insurance company in the event that your policy provides for some sort of reimbursement. We encourage you to contact your insurance company directly to determine details of coverage and reimbursement.

Do you offer a sliding scale fee structure?
As a general rule, we do not offer reduced fees on our evaluations or treatments. However, in rare circumstances, we have been able to accommodate the needs of our patients on a temporary basis.

Which payment options do you accept?
The Hallowell Center accepts cash, checks and credit cards (Visa, MasterCard, American Express, Discover). Payment is due at time of service.
